Virtual Family Room allows deployed warfighters the opportunity for meaningful interactions with family members. The deployed warfighter joins family members in the virtual environment to play strategy games (e.g., block builder), to play recreational games (e.g., mini-golf), or to engage in collaborative activities (e.g., work homework problems). The Virtual Family Room has advantage over passive communication technologies, such as video chat, because it provides an increased sense of participation and engagement. These effects are particularly important for young children who lack the ability to engage in complex verbal communication.
